■About the work
I painted the Japanese monster "Nekomata" based on the composition of "Lipstick" painted by Okamoto Shinso, a genius of the Taisho era who died young.
In the Edo period, the oil used for lamps was fish (sardine) oil, a smell that cats like, so many cats would lick the oil, and there was a superstition that old cats would transform into humans and turn into cat-like creatures.
Also, geisha used to be called cats, and the shamisen they played was made of cat skin, so pictures of geisha and cats together have been seen in Japan since ancient times.
