■About the work
This is an early painting in which he experimented with the procedure of creating a base on the canvas using various techniques and then painting the background and kimono patterns in a way that made the most of that base.
We attempted to recreate the look of Japanese paintings on torn and patched paper.
This work was created at a time when he was experimenting with canvases that he could paint on while traveling on planes between Italy and France, and the small size was chosen so that he could paint in an economy class seat.
