■About the work Benzaiten, the goddess of performing arts, a common motif in the "Mitate Benten" series, is depicted as a scaled-down version in the same pose as "Mitate Benten" (I).
In India, Benzaiten is the river goddess Sarasvati, who became the goddess of flowing things like river water, then the goddess of music and writing, then the goddess of performing arts. This was brought to Japan and became Benzaiten, but the various motifs originally representing Saraswati, such as water, lotus, peacock, and moon, were inherited by Benzaiten as they were, and there are even Benzaiten temples in ponds overgrown with lotus flowers, such as Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, Tokyo.
In this painting, the pattern of the kimono is taken from the "Shidan-mado Five-stringed Biwa" treasure of the Shosoin Repository, and is superimposed on the painting of the biwa. The peacock feathers on the obi are taken from the Uemura Manor, and by quoting patterns from various eras such as modern headphones, the universality of art is expressed. The overlapping of the lines of the kimono and the hairpin was inspired by Utamaro.
