■About the work
The legendary Princess Ouna is said to reside in the castle tower of Himeji Castle and appear before the lord of the castle once a year to predict the future.
She is said to be a fox monster, but since "Osakabe" is actually "Osakae," which means snake in the dialect around Himeji Castle, Ounahime herself is thought to be a supernatural being that represents a good omen.
The snake is taken from the ukiyo-e of Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
The kimono pattern is based on the hollyhock, which is taken from the twelve-month flower and bird painting by Sakai Hoitsu, who was from the Sakai family and also the lord of Himeji Castle, and is associated with the sixth month (the snake in the Chinese zodiac).
The woman's pose is based on Utamaro's ukiyo-e print "Nama-Yui."
