■About the work
The painting features motifs such as lotus, peacock, flowing water, and moon, which represent Saraswati, the Indian goddess of rivers, writing, music, and performing arts, who is known in Japan as Benzaiten. The pattern on the kimono is a reference to the "Shidan Raden Five-stringed Biwa" that is preserved in the Shosoin Repository in Japan, and together with the headphones, it represents music. The end of the hairpin is shaped like a crane because it was once believed that crane bones had the power to cure all illnesses, and crane bones were used by aristocrats and women of high status as a comb material, more prestigious than tortoiseshell. In fact, combs of this shape still exist. I painted this painting just before the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to pray for people's health, along with performing arts.
