■About the work
In reality, tigers do not live in bamboo forests, but I chose the subject of the painting as a depiction of a tiger sacrificing itself to feed on, taken from the Tamamushi Shrine, which is said to have been the inspiration for painting tigers and bamboo together in Japan.
"Shushin Shiko," which tells the story of Shakyamuni offering himself to a tiger in a previous life, is often confused with the "story of the rabbit who offered himself to Shaka" that was passed down from the Jataka tales to the Konjaku Monogatari, and is also featured in Osamu Tezuka's Buddha.
The woman is wearing what appears to be armour, which is a reference to a rabbit-eared helmet (Chiba Prefectural Museum and Art, among many other examples), and is based on a prayer from the Warring States period to gain the hearing of a rabbit.
It is a symbol of the mixture of East and West, past and present, by combining the characteristics of O-yoroi, Tosei-gusoku, and Nanban-gusoku with those of the bunny girl invented by the Playboy Club in the United States in 1960. The original live painting of this work was done at the Medici Riccardi Palace in Florence in 2014 and at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France in 2016.
