■About the work
The hairstyle depicted in this painting is the Sakko (Sakikogai), which was popular in the late Edo period, mainly in western Japan, but is now known as a hairstyle worn only by maiko when making greetings just before changing collars (changing from maiko to geisha). I depicted in the painting the contrast between the moment when a girl changes clothes to become an adult and the moment when she already has flowers carved on her back.
