■About the work
This painting depicts the poem "Looking in the direction where the cuckoo is singing, only the bright moon remains," which is also found in the Hyakunin Isshu.
The cuckoo featured on the kimono is a reference to Katsushika Hokusai's flower and bird paintings.
As the lesser cuckoo is also a seasonal word for summer, the motif is a summer chrysanthemum flower motif combined with the "Hatsune" motif from Genjikoh, with the moon in the background suggesting the first sounds of dawn.
The original canvas was painted in Amsterdam in 2016 and completed in a different form, but was extensively adapted in Japan in 2023 to its current form.
