■About the work
The original canvas was created in 2011 for an art fair in Basel and was originally an anthropomorphized cat catching a mouse, borrowed from Hokusai. However, based on advice from Murakami Takashi that a picture of a mouse would be unacceptable in Europe given its history of the plague, the design was changed in 2017 to a picture of a cat playing with a ball.
In Japan, balls are made from long threads, so they are considered to be lucky charms that represent longevity or good fortune. In 2023, we added a further touch to the collar, with a collage of Takahama Kyoshi's haiku "Temari Uta: Sadness Made Beautiful" by calligrapher Okaniwa Donseki.
This haiku was written in 1939, the year the Second World War broke out, and the sadness reflects the social climate of the time. I think the painting is fitting for telling the story of history, even today, when the destruction of war continues.
