■About the work
"Yatsushi-e" is a style of painting that arranges old authoritative figures in a modern style, and was popular during the Edo period. In this original canvas, the Inari deity is depicted as a yatsushi in the form of a woman in a kimono. Foxes are often seen at Inari shrines as incarnations of the god of agriculture, and one theory is that the archaic word for "kitsune," ketsune, means "hair root," which means the root (origin) of hair (something that grows). The rice ear pattern on the kimono is taken from old maki-e.
