■About the work
In Buddhism, a painting depicting Amida riding on a cloud to welcome the deceased to their deathbed is called a "Raigo-zu."
The original canvas, which references this design, which became popular from the mid-Heian period onwards, was begun in Japan around 2012 and completed in Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2014 after undergoing significant changes. The colorful pipe smoke is a reference to Amsterdam, where cannabis is legal, and the background is a wave, a reference to the Netherlands as a maritime nation. Of the two maiko, the larger one on the left is still immature, and admires the perfection of the full-body maiko on the right. The difference in perfection between the two maiko is expressed by the extent to which the fish on their heads are integrated into the figures.
