■About the work
The story of the two warrior families, the Genji and the Heike, who fought in Japan more than 800 years ago, is full of legends. In particular, the story of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who destroyed the Heike but was disliked by his brother and pursued himself, losing his life, and his lover, the Shirabyoshi (dancer), Shizuka Gozen, is very famous. After parting ways with Yoshitsune in the mountains of Yoshino, Shizuka Gozen was captured and sent to Kamakura, but when she was ordered to dance in front of her lover's enemy, Yoritomo, she dared to sing a song of love for Yoshitsune, saying, "I long for the traces of the man who stepped through the white snow on the peaks of Mt. Yoshino and entered," enraging Yoritomo. Shizuka Gozen, who was determined to remain true to her love even at the risk of death, has been the motif of many artists, including Uemura Shōen, and while I followed the basic elements of her eboshi hat and kasumi, I also chose to paint her in a modern style, without being bound by the era, such as the color of her eyes and the red of her lips. The "Mount Yoshino" painted on the fan is taken from Hiroshige's "Oi, one of the 69 Stations of the Kiso Highway."
