■About the work
"I drew this with Benzaiten, the goddess of performing arts, as the motif.
In India, Benzaiten is the river goddess Sarasvati, who became the goddess of flowing things like river water, then the goddess of music and writing, then the goddess of performing arts. This was brought to Japan and became Benzaiten, but the various motifs originally representing Saraswati, such as water, lotus, peacock, and moon, were inherited by Benzaiten as they were, and there are even Benzaiten temples in ponds overgrown with lotus flowers, such as Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, Tokyo.
The motif continues from the previous works "Mitate Benten" and "Mitate Benten II". The pattern of the kimono is from Okada Tameyasu, the peacock feathers on the headphones and obi are from Uemura Manor, and the water flow is from Ogata Korin's "Yatsuhashi Maki-e Inkstone Box" lower section. By quoting designs from various eras such as modern headphones, the universality of art is expressed. The lines of the kimono are from Uemura Manor, and parts of the topknot and hairpin are from old Maki-e.
