Mitate-Benten Ⅱ / 見立て弁天Ⅱ　#3/20

■About the work
Following on from "Mitate Benten," I created a painting of Benzaiten, the goddess of performing arts, as a tribute to Clip Studio, an application for digitally creating manga, illustrations, animations, and more.
In India, Benzaiten is the river goddess Saraswati, who became the goddess of flowing things like river water, then the goddess of music and writing, then the goddess of performing arts. This was brought to Japan and became Benzaiten, but the various motifs originally representing Saraswati, such as water, lotus, peacock, and moon, were inherited by Benzaiten as they were, and there are even Benzaiten temples in ponds overgrown with lotus flowers, such as Shinobazu Pond in Ueno, Tokyo. To show the connection with India, yoga poses are painted in lacquer on the headphones.
The motif continues from the previous work "Mitate Benten", and the pattern of the kimono is taken from the "Shidan Raden Five-stringed Biwa" treasure of the Shosoin Repository. The peacock feathers on the obi are taken from Uemura Manor, the water flow is taken from the lower section of Ogata Korin's "Yatsuhashi Makie Inkstone Box", and the use of modern headphones and other designs from various eras represents the universality of art. The lines of the kimono are taken from Uemura Manor, and the overlapping of the topknot and hairpin is taken from Utamaro.
