■About the work
When I was creating a mural at Tennozu Isle in Tokyo in 2015, I researched the etymology of the place name "Tennozu" and found out that it was related to Gozu Tenno. So I created a statue of Gozu Tenno, which I then modified and cleaned up in a smaller size in 2016, and this is the original canvas painting. I quoted the black cow and dog from Nagasawa Rosetsu's "White Elephant and Black Cow Screen" and combined the decorative cow and young maiden umbrella seen in "Flower Rice Planting in Mibu" to create a painting with spring as its theme. The gold or yellow color of the whites of the eyes represents anger, as in Noh masks. The right hand that grabs the collar is the hand of a demon, reflecting the fierce character of Gozu Tenno. The coloring, which combines regular dot stencils, reproduces the moiré pattern seen in manga manuscripts using screentones.
