■About the work
This painting was done using Yuriko Tiger, an Italian cosplayer who is also active in Japan, as a model. The kimono and obi were used as models from the 2017 model at Shinjuku Takashimaya Kimono Department, and the painting was done based on a photo of the exact same outfit and pose. The model photography was done by Marfa Vasilieva, a photographer who came to Japan from Ukraine. The gold background references a tiger painted by Kano Sansetsu, and the overall theme and title of the painting is the famous anecdote of Ikkyu-san (Ikkyu Sojun), "The Tiger on the Folding Screen." The model Yuriko "Tiger" and Kano Sansetsu's tiger appear to be on good terms. Who is trying to capture who? I made the painting open to various interpretations.
