■About the work
This painting was created in 2022 as an updated version of the original canvas painting "Orca" created in 2016.
The shachihoko (rope-shaped helmet bowl) is taken from the Takatsu Ancient Culture Hall, and since the shachihoko is a type of dragon that is used on castle tiles as a fire-fighting deity, we chose to wear a iris hair ornament in the month of May, which corresponds to the year of the dragon.
The pattern of the kimono is a tie-dyed hemp leaf pattern on a blue and red background, which is often seen in ukiyo-e prints and other art, as seen in the costume of Yaoya Oshichi, the heroine of the Tenna Fire. The hairpin she holds is decorated with an ornament that resembles the horse banner of an Edo firefighter, and the sphere and cube represent mustard seeds and a measuring cup, a play on the word "extinguish" (to extinguish).
Combined with the moon and water in the background, the whole painting is a prayer picture representing fire and disaster prevention.
