■About the work
The flower depicted in this painting, called Shirane Aoi, is an alpine plant endemic to Japan (one genus, one species), and a perennial plant. Although it is designated as an endangered species by some local governments as a red list, it has long grown in abundance in the artist's hometown, and is a familiar flower. What appear to be petals are actually sepals. Combined with the girl in a kimono with Korin patterns, the painting has a pure and elegant feel.
