■About the work It is a well-known fact that the "Irises" paintings, which were often painted by Rinpa artists including Ogata Korin, are based on the eighth chapter of the "Tales of Ise," titled "Going East."
This painting also takes The Tales of Ise as its theme, and the iris design itself is taken from the Iris Screen by Sakai Hōitsu, a representative of the Edo Rinpa school, while the iris design on the obi and collar is taken from the kimono "Kosode with Eight Bridges and Iris Motif" (Late Edo period, Matsuzakaya Dyeing and Weaving Reference Product) worn by the model in Okada Saburosuke's "Woman with Iris Flowers," expressing the timeless universality of the feelings of the people depicted in The Tales of Ise.
